Fair Weather Helper

My husband, Jason, likes to call me his Fair Weather Helper.  Meaning I only like to go help around the farm in the spring, summer and fall.  I’ve thought about this for a few years actually.  Turns out he’s not wrong.  I will go out and do what needs to be done in the depth of winter, but I don’t want to, and I only stay out as long as absolutely necessary (unless I get to snowshoe, I LOVE snowshoeing)!!

This however does not mean I am not working.  I catch up on ‘paperwork’, which really it’s 2025 it’s really computer work now.  I don’t mind doing it, but when it’s 75 and sunny out I’m not going to choose paperwork.

Some years back, maybe 8 or so, we heard a talk at a small farm conference that opened our eyes to the fact that really our farm needs to be a business first.  Which means all the paperwork needed to be a priority and it just wasn’t at that time (and if I’m being honest I fail at this monthly- but better every year).  Animals obviously come first on our farm, but my primary role is ‘paperwork’.  Marketing director, website overseer, customer service representative, billing administrator, appointment scheduler (for all the animals and share members) are just some of the other job titles that I, as the farm wife, hold.  It’s not to say Jason doesn’t help me with those if I need it, but he does many things I can’t do so it’s a nice balance between us (and let’s be honest if he was still doing these rolls it truly would be paperwork- he has farmer deep in his blood and computers/technology aren’t a priority for him).

I’ve accepted that I'm a fair weather helper.  I’m ok with this title, there is still much to be done inside and I’ll happily grab a cup of tea, hot coco or coffee and get to work!
